US Title Series 2008 Season Draws to Close at Dayton

For the second year in a row, Mother Nature was less than cooperative at the USTS’ Dayton Regatta at the Hydrobowl. This year, we were mainly plagued by consistent and sometimes gusty winds. The whether man called for rain showers all day Friday, however, we only experienced the occasional sprinkle during the morning. By noon, the first boats made it to the water and testing continued until 6PM without incident. Despite the threatening weather forecast, concerns about hurricane Ike and high gas prices, a good turnout of boats made its way to Dayton. Saturday morning, the prospects for the day’s racing were promising. There was a light breeze moving across the course from west to east, but water looked good. Following driver’s meeting, testing took place from about 10AM until noon. The wind speed gradually increased and the waves moving across the lake began to cause a significant chop. Shortly before the conclusion of testing, Paulie Bosnich caught a wind gust and his 125 hydro went sailing into the air. Both the boat and Paulie sustained light damage and both will be back on the water quickly. The wind continued to gather speed all day and there was no way to put on a show. The race committee moved the course further to the west, but the winds just made racing conditions poor.
