The USTS holds its 5th race of the season at Constantine, Michigan : The Biggest Winners of All
|
August 11, 2008
The real winners at this year’s US Title Series regatta in Constantine, Michigan had to be the officials and volunteers that overcame all that Mother Nature threw at the event. Before the first trailers appeared, Tom Kirts and Ike Yoder brought their boats out and were busily dragging the water weed growth that was attempting to take over the lake. Without their tireless efforts, it would have been close to impossible to race on this otherwise beautiful lake. This year’s event was the 2008 Eastern Divisional Championship for the PRO classes that competed.
Friday’s rather mild weather allowed for a great day of testing. Fred Mason served all day on the safety boat and thankfully had a most boring day, limited to a few tow-ins here and there. The lake was a busy place during testing with teams from all over the country in attendance. Drivers and mechanics were doggedly preparing for the weekend’s racing and looking forward the PRO Nationals the following weekend in DePue.
Saturday’s weather went from bad to worse as the morning moved towards noon. After an hour of testing, the steady rain forced a halt to events and we went into “hold” mode. The weather forecast did not look promising for the day, as a big front was moving slowly from east to west. Thanks to modern technology, we were able to monitor the progress of the weather system and around 2 PM we could see a break coming. The decision to go was made and the safety boats moved onto the water quickly. The first set of racing was run-off very quickly and efficiently with only an occasional sprinkle. After the needed break, the second set began to move along well. Near the finish of the final set, we had a 20 minute rain break. Luckily, the isolated down pour moved quickly away. Shortly before 6:30PM the last boats came off the water. Mark Wheeler (referee) and Shirley Summers led the great officiating crew at this event. Despite the challenges and interruptions this team overcame all and “won” the day. Ray Rodda, the “Voice”, kept everyone informed of our plans and progress in addition to calling the exciting races on the water. It would have been easy to throw the towel in early due to the weather. We are fortunate to have a dedicated and capable crew managing our competition. Kristi ran the heats as tight as possible. Fred Mason and his safety crews had a relatively quiet day once again.
